Why are Council developing a Cemetery Strategy?

Council is currently developing a Cemetery Strategy that will guide Council’s approach to improving and maintaining these cemeteries over the short, medium and long-term. This includes analysing the current and future capacity of each site; identifying development growth opportunities at each site and ensuring our services meet predicted future demands. It will also include a Cemetery Maintenance Guide relating to the maintenance of facilities, graves, headstones and sites.

What cemeteries will the Strategy look at?

The Strategy will focus on Council’s ‘operational’ cemeteries.  These are the cemeteries that are still used for burial and memorialisation, even where the extent of use is relatively low.

Whilst the Arakoon Historical Cemetery and Comara Cemetery would be included, and heritage would be an important consideration, the Strategy is not a review of heritage and historical matters.

What changes may be considered to the cemeteries?

The Strategy will be supported by Site Plans, and for some higher use cemeteries Master Plans, that will set out recommended changes.  Where use of cemeteries is low and no issues are identified, little will change in the future.

How will the Cemetery Strategy be implemented?

The Cemetery Strategy will identify opportunities for implementation of improvements over the short, medium and long-term.  These will be undertaken by Council as required and in response to the needs of the community.
