Kempsey Regional Saleyards - Strategic Options

Council own and manage the Kempsey Regional Saleyards. Around 40 sales a year are conducted at the facility with approximately 30,000 head of cattle sold annually. Council have committed to retaining a saleyards in the area but are reviewing options for future operation and management.

Development of future options has been undertaken through business analytics and surveys of agents operating out of the facility as well as users who buy and sell cattle. A stakeholder workshop was also conducted in March to gain more insight into users preferences. This feedback, along with detailed financial modelling has confirmed five possible options;

  • Maintain - Council continues to operate the facility without significant investment
  • Upgrade - Council continues to own and operate, undertakes significant capital works
  • Lease - Council enters a long-term lease with an external party operating the facility
  • Sell - Council enters into a sale agreement with an alternative saleyard operator
  • New Facility - Council builds a new facility

Further detail about all the options is presented in the Options Paper.

The Options Paper is now on public exhibition and Council want to know the community's preferences.

Have your say before the submissions close on Friday 23 August 2019.
