New Waste Service

Consultation has concluded

Kempsey Shire Council’s new waste collection service starting from 1 July 2017, means the size of the bins and how often they are collected will change. For the majority of residents the cost of the new service will be less than what you are currently paying.

The changes aim to increase recycling, reduce the amount of waste going to the local landfill and keep costs down for the community. Everyone who has a waste service will have three new bins;

  • green bin for all food and garden organics, collected weekly
  • yellow bin for household recycling, collected fortnightly
  • red bin for rubbish, collected fortnightly

To help make it easier for you to sort your waste, you also get a free kitchen caddy for food waste and a free bag for collecting and disposing of recycling.

The change to the waste service has meant delivering 36,000 new bins and removing 24,000 old bins. That's 60,000 bins Council has been dealing with!

With the new service starting from July 1 we want to make sure any last minute questions or concerns are answered. Go to the Your Questions tab below, post your question and we'll give you an answer.

We loved using the kitchen caddy over the Christmas holidays at our holiday house at Hat Head, it’s incredible how much waste can be used for green waste, it’s a great initiative Kempsey Shire Council has in place. I would like to buy another kitchen caddy as our free one we received broke. How do I purchase a kitchen caddy? Kind regards Ladine Smith

Ladine asked over 2 years ago

Hi Ladine, Thanks for your enquiry. In order for you to get another kitchen caddy you will need to call the waste hotline on 1300 342 207.

Aside from the green bin weekly pick up, what other coloured bin goes out in Hat Head next Monday - Red or yellow ?

Hutcheson asked over 3 years ago

Hi, it's really easy to find out when your bins go out, simply go to: http://www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au/bincalendar follow the two step process, look up the alphabetical list to find your street and whether you are a Week A or Week B then open the Week A or Week B calendar for your street. After this, if in doubt next week put all 3 of your bins out and the correct 2 will be emptied.

Hi Just curious way RIVER STREET WEST KEMPSEY is now collected on a TUESDAY yet its not highlighted as a change of day currently we get collected WEDNESDAY mornings

ollie13 asked over 3 years ago

Hi, the current waste contractor split River Street, West Kempsey into two sections. One section was collected on a Tuesday and the other on a Wednesday. Our new contractor will now collect all of the street on a Tuesday. Thanks for pointing it out.

My bin was collected immediately after it was emptied. How do I get it back as I wanted to keep it as was offered by council.

Mandi082 asked over 3 years ago

    Hi,

The bin collections contractor is in the process of collecting 24,000 bins across the Shire. It was part of the contract to remove old bins and reduce costs of the new waste contract.

It was never suggested by Council to keep your old bins and therefore it is not possible to get your old bin back once its been removed.

How can you possibly get renting holiday makers to comply with the sorting requirements? Isn't this going to cause contaminated load problems?

BeeGee asked over 3 years ago

Hi, the three bin system is best practice across Australia and is standard in many areas so lots of visitors to our area will be familiar with this process.  All real estate agents and owners  have been provided with information to sort and save. The bins are also hot stamped with what can go in each bin.

Almost all of the 36,000 bins have been rolled out. If you haven't received you bins by COB tomorrow  Wednesday 28 June, please contact the Waste Hotline number on 1300 342 207 and we will endeavour to have it to you by the end of the week.

Council has a bin collection calendar on its website. Just follow the two easy steps on this link. http://www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au/bincalendar . After this if in doubt next week put all 3 of your bins out and the correct 2 will be emptied.
